AI search is what happens when a search engine stops handing back a list of links and starts handing back an answer. You ask a question in plain language; instead of ten results to sift through, you get one synthesized, conversational response — usually citing a few of the sources it was built from.

What AI search actually means

A quick clarification first, because the phrase trips people up: AI search means search powered by AI— not searching for information about AI. It’s a new way the engine works, not a new topic to search for.

Under the hood, AI search is built on large language models paired with retrieval — a retrieval-augmented-generation style pipeline. Rather than matching your query to pages and ordering them, the system reads across multiple sources and writes a single answer grounded in what it found. How it works

Does it replace SEO?

Not the discipline — the target. AI search still reads the open web, so content has to be crawlable, credible, and well-structured to be retrieved and cited at all.
