Answer Engine OptimizationAEO
The practice of getting your brand named, quoted, and cited inside the answers AI engines give buyers — rather than ranking a link they may never click.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is what search optimization becomes when the search engine stops handing back a list of links and starts handing back an answer. The job is no longer just to rank — it’s to be the source that answer is built from and points to.
What AEO actually means
An answer engineis any system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer rather than a page of results: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot. When a buyer asks one of these “what’s the best tool for X?”, they get a short, confident recommendation — often naming two or three brands and citing a handful of sources.
AEO is the practice of making sure your brand is one of the names, and one of the citations. The unit of visibility shifts from a ranked link the buyer might click to a mention inside the answer they actually read.
Why it exists now
For twenty-five years, winning search meant earning one of ten blue links and hoping for the click. That model is eroding fast: answer engines increasingly resolve the query in place, so a growing share of questions end without anyone visiting a website at all. If the answer doesn’t mention you, you were effectively invisible for that query — no matter how well your page would have ranked.
AEO vs. traditional SEO
AEO doesn’t replace SEO’s fundamentals — clear, credible, well-structured content still wins — but the target changes.
What actually moves AEO
The levers overlap with good SEO but tilt toward being quotable and verifiable:
- Be the cited source.Publish the specific, evidence-backed pages the models reach for — comparisons, “best X for Y” answers, and data buyers actually ask about.
- Write extractable passages. Answer the question directly, up front, in self-contained sentences a model can lift without the surrounding page.
- Be consistent across the web. Models trust entities that line up across your site, review platforms (G2, Capterra), and communities (Reddit) — third-party mentions carry real weight.
- Stay machine-readable. Clean structure, schema, and crawlable content so answer-engine bots can actually read and attribute you.
- Stay fresh. Answer engines favor current sources; stale pages quietly drop out of the answer.
How you measure it
AEO is only manageable once it’s visible. That means monitoring, across every major engine and the real prompts your buyers ask: whether you’re mentioned, what the models say about you, which pages they cite, and how your share of the recommendation stacks up against competitors. Without that baseline, “doing AEO” is guesswork — which is exactly the gap tools like PageLens exist to close.
Frequently asked
- Is AEO the same as SEO?
- No. Traditional SEO optimizes to rank a link in a list the buyer then clicks. AEO optimizes to be named, quoted, or cited inside the single answer an AI engine generates — where there may be no click at all. The two overlap (both reward clear, credible, well-structured content) but the goal and the unit of success differ.
- Is AEO the same as GEO?
- They're closely related and often used interchangeably. AEO is the broader goal — visibility inside answer engines of any kind. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the narrower, more technical practice of getting large language models to retrieve and generate from your content specifically.
- How do you measure AEO?
- By tracking, across the major AI engines, how often you're mentioned for the prompts your buyers actually ask, what the models say about you, which sources they cite, and how your share of the recommendation compares to competitors — because you can't improve a surface you can't see.
