The ten blue links are collapsing into one answer on top — across every engine. AI SEO is the work of staying visible in it.

AI SEO is the umbrella term for staying visible as search becomes answers. As Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity resolve more queries in place, “ranking” matters less than being the source the answer is built from.

What AI SEO means

AI SEO is the practice of earning visibility across AI-driven search surfaces — Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and the rest. It keeps everything good SEO already asks for (be crawlable, fast, credible, clearly structured) and adds a new objective: when an engine answers a buyer’s question, your brand should be named and your pages cited.

A quick disambiguation: “AI SEO” is sometimes used to mean using AI tools to do SEO faster. That’s real, but different from the sense here — optimizing to be visible in AI search. This entry is about the second.

The shift it responds to

For decades the search results page was a list you scanned and clicked. Now an AI-generated answer increasingly sits on top of — or in place of — that list, and a large share of buyers never scroll past it. The same shift is happening on every major engine at once, which is why AI SEO is a discipline rather than a one-platform tactic.

How AI SEO relates to AEO and GEO

Think of it as one umbrella with two practices under it. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the goal — be in the answer. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the technical execution — shape content so a language model retrieves and generates from it. AI SEO is the whole program that ties those to your existing search work.

What actually moves AI SEO

  • Keep the SEO foundation. Crawlable, fast, technically clean pages — answer engines read the same web crawlers do.
  • Be citable, not just rankable. Direct answers, real evidence, and self-contained passages the models can lift.
  • Be a consistent entity. Facts about your brand should agree across your site, review platforms and communities.
  • Cover the real questions. Map the prompts your buyers ask and make sure a strong, current page answers each one.
  • Measure across engines. Track mentions, citations and share of voice on each AI surface — the only way to know if any of the above is working.

Frequently asked

Does AI SEO replace regular SEO?
No — it extends it. The fundamentals (crawlable, fast, credible, well-structured content) still matter, because answer engines read the same web. AI SEO adds a new goal on top: being the source those engines cite in the answer, not just a link in a list.
Is AI SEO the same as AEO and GEO?
AI SEO is the umbrella. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are the specific practices under it — AEO is the goal of being in the answer, GEO is the technical craft of getting a language model to retrieve and generate from your content.
Does “AI SEO” mean using AI to do SEO?
The phrase gets used both ways. One meaning is using AI tools to speed up SEO work (drafting, clustering, audits). The more important meaning — and the one this entry covers — is optimizing to be visible in AI-driven search itself. They're easy to confuse, so it's worth being explicit about which you mean.
