Brand Mentions
Every time your brand is named across the web and in AI answers — linked or not — a signal of authority that increasingly drives whether AI recommends you.

A brand mention is any instance your brand name appears across the web or inside an AI answer — in news, blogs, forums, reviews and social posts — whether or not there’s a link attached. In the AI era, being talked about has become a signal in its own right.
What counts as a mention
The definition is deliberately broad. A journalist naming you in an article, a Reddit thread debating your product, a G2 review, a tweet, a passing reference in a competitor’s comparison — all of these are brand mentions. What unites them is that your name surfaces in text somewhere out on the web, or in the answer an AI engine gives.
Crucially, a mention doesn’t require a hyperlink. A sentence that names your brand but links nowhere is still a mention — often called a linkless or unlinked mention — and it still tells machines that your brand exists and is being discussed.
Mentions vs. backlinks
It’s easy to conflate the two, but they’re distinct. A backlink is a clickable link pointing at your site — it passes traffic and link equity. A brand mention is any reference to your name, link or no link.
Why AI engines care
Answer engines are trying to judge which brands are worth recommending, and how a category talks about them. The volume and tone of mentions across their sources feeds directly into that judgment.
- Frequency. A brand named often across many independent sources looks established, not obscure.
- Sentiment. How positively you’re described colors whether a model recommends you or warns against you.
- Breadth of sources. Mentions spread across credible, varied places count for more than the same publisher repeating your name.
Turning mentions into an advantage
Because mentions feed AI recommendations, they’re worth tracking the way you’d track rankings: how often you come up, in what tone, and how that compares with competitors. Earning more — and more positive — mentions across the sources answer engines read is one of the more direct ways to improve whether, and how, AI recommends you.
Frequently asked
- Do unlinked brand mentions matter?
- Yes, increasingly. A mention with no hyperlink — sometimes called a linkless or unlinked mention — still tells search and AI systems that your brand exists, is being discussed, and is associated with a topic. These entity and authority signals carry real weight, even without a click-through link attached.
- How are mentions different from backlinks?
- A backlink is a clickable link pointing to your site. A brand mention is any reference to your name — in an article, forum thread, review or AI answer — whether or not it links anywhere. Every backlink involves a link; a mention can be entirely link-free and still count as a signal.
- How do AI engines use mentions?
- Answer engines weigh how often, and how positively, a brand is mentioned across the sources they draw on when deciding whether to recommend it. A brand named frequently and favorably across credible sources looks like a safer recommendation than one that rarely comes up.
