A citation is the numbered source an answer names as the basis for what it says.

An AI citation is the specific source an AI answer links to or names as the basis for its response. In the era of AI search, being cited is what ranking used to be: it’s how you earn credibility, and how you earn the click.

What a citation is

When an answer engine responds to a question, it doesn’t just assert facts into the void — it points to where they came from. Perplexity, ChatGPT Search and Google’s AI Overviews all display numbered source links beside their answers. Each of those links is a citation: an explicit statement that this source informed this part of the answer.

For a brand, being one of those cited sources is the goal. It puts your name inside the answer the buyer actually reads, and it carries a link they can follow — the closest thing the AI-search era has to a top ranking.

Why citations are the new ranking

In classic search, success meant a high position and the click that followed. In an answer engine there often is no list to climb — there’s one synthesized response naming a few sources. Being cited is what earns both the credibility of appearing in the answer and the click-through back to your site.

Citations vs. brand mentions

The two are related but distinct. A brand mention is any time your name appears — in an article, a forum, or an answer — whether or not it links anywhere. A citation is the tighter case: a source the AI attributes its answer to, named or linked as the basis for a claim. Every citation is a form of mention; most mentions are not citations.

How you earn them

Citations go to sources a model can find, trust, and lift a clean answer from.

  • Answer the question directly. State the answer plainly and up front, in self-contained sentences a model can quote without the surrounding page.
  • Be trustworthy. Back claims with evidence, name your authors, and earn the credibility signals that make a model comfortable citing you.
  • Be retrievable. Keep content crawlable, well-structured and current, so answer-engine bots can actually read and attribute it.

Frequently asked

What is an AI citation?
An AI citation is a source an AI answer explicitly links to or names as the basis for its response. Answer engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT Search and Google's AI Overviews show numbered source links alongside their answers; each of those is a citation, crediting where the information came from.
How is a citation different from a mention?
A brand mention is any reference to your name, linked or not, anywhere on the web or in an answer. A citation is narrower: it's a source the AI attributes its answer to — named or linked as the basis for a claim. Every citation is a kind of mention, but most mentions aren't citations.
How do I get cited by AI?
Be a clear, trustworthy, retrievable source that answers the question directly. That means writing self-contained passages that state the answer plainly, backing claims with evidence, keeping content current, staying machine-readable, and earning the credibility signals — mentions, reviews, authoritative coverage — that make a model comfortable naming you.
