Conversational Search
Search as a back-and-forth dialogue — you ask, refine and follow up while the system keeps context — instead of firing off separate keyword queries.
“ok, which of those has a free plan?”
Of those, yourbrand has a free plan for up to 3 seats1

Conversational search is search you carry on like a conversation. Instead of firing off a string of separate keyword queries, you ask a question, read the answer, and then refine or follow up — while the system keeps track of everything you’ve said so far.
What conversational search actually means
The defining trait is memory across turns. When you ask a follow-up like “which of those is cheapest?”, the system already knows what “those” refers to — the options it named a moment ago. You never have to restate the context, because the whole exchange is treated as one continuous thread rather than a set of unrelated lookups.
This is what large language models made possible. Because they process a running history of the dialogue, they can interpret each new message in light of everything that came before — the way a person would if you kept talking to them.
Where it happens
Conversational search is the native mode of the AI answer engines buyers increasingly reach for:
- ChatGPT — research a category, then keep narrowing in the same chat.
- Google AI Mode— Google’s conversational, follow-up-friendly search experience.
- Perplexity — answers with cited sources you can interrogate further.
- Microsoft Copilot — the same multi-turn pattern across Bing and Windows.
Conversational vs. single-shot search
The contrast is with the classic model, where each search stands alone and the burden of keeping context falls on you.
What it means for your content
When buyers explore across a conversation, a single well-ranked page for a single query isn’t enough. Someone might start broad — “what tools do X?” — then narrow to price, integrations, or team size across several follow-ups. You want to be one of the names the engine keeps surfacing as that thread unfolds, not just the answer to the opening question.
In practice that means answering the questions that come next: the comparisons, the “which of these has a free plan?”, the objections a buyer raises once they’ve narrowed the field. Cover the whole conversation, and you stay in it to the end.
Frequently asked
- How is conversational search different from regular search?
- Regular search treats every query as a fresh, independent request — you type keywords, get a list of links, and if you want to narrow things down you start over with a new search. Conversational search is a continuous dialogue: the system remembers what you already asked, so you can refine and follow up in plain language and each answer builds on the last.
- Where does conversational search happen?
- It's how the major AI answer engines work — ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. All of them hold context across turns, so a buyer can research a category, narrow to a shortlist, and drill into specifics without ever restating what they mean.
- What does conversational search mean for my content?
- Buyers no longer make a single decision on a single query. They explore across a whole thread — comparing, filtering, and asking follow-ups. To win, your brand has to be surfaced consistently across that conversation, not just for one opening question, which means covering the follow-up questions buyers actually ask next.
