Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google’s experiment in putting a generative-AI answer at the very top of the search results page. Announced in 2023 and tested in Search Labs, it was the trial run for what Google later launched broadly as AI Overviews — which is why SGE is now largely a historical term.
What SGE was
In 2023, Google began testing SGE inside Search Labs, its opt-in home for experimental features. The idea: for many queries, generate an AI-written answer that summarizes several sources and place it above the traditional list of links. Instead of scanning ten results, a searcher could read one synthesized response at the top.
It was explicitly an experiment — a way for Google to learn how generative answers behaved in real search before committing to them at scale.
From experiment to AI Overviews
The experiment worked well enough to ship. Google launched the feature broadly in the US in 2024 under a new name: AI Overviews. So the AI answer you now see on top of Google results is the direct descendant of SGE — the same core experience, graduated from the labs into the live product.
SGE vs. AI Overviews
The two names describe the same lineage at different stages — worth keeping straight:
Why it still matters for brands
The shift SGE previewed is the one that reshaped search: an AI answer on top that resolves many queries in place, pushing the classic links below the fold. Being named or cited inside that answer — not just ranking a link beneath it — is what visibility now means. The levers are the familiar answer-engine ones:
- Be crawlable and structured.Google’s AI can only summarize and cite pages it can read cleanly.
- Write extractable answers. Direct, self-contained passages are the easiest for the model to lift and attribute.
- Build credibility.Consistent third-party mentions signal that you’re a source worth citing.
Frequently asked
- Is SGE still around?
- Not as a named experiment. SGE was Google's generative-AI search project in Search Labs; the feature it was testing graduated into a launched product called AI Overviews. So the experience lives on, but under the AI Overviews name rather than SGE.
- What's the difference between SGE and AI Overviews?
- SGE was the experiment — the labs test, opt-in through Search Labs, of an AI-generated answer at the top of results. AI Overviews is the launched feature that experiment became, rolled out broadly in the US in 2024. Same core idea; SGE was the trial, AI Overviews is the product.
- What was SGE?
- Search Generative Experience was Google's experimental way of putting a generative-AI answer at the top of the search results page — announced in 2023 and tested in Search Labs. It summarized multiple sources into one AI-written response above the classic links, and was the precursor to AI Overviews.
