GEO vs SEO vs AEO: the differences that matter

The short answer

SEO, AEO and GEO answer the same question from three angles. SEO tunes a page so a search engine ranks its link, and the win is a position someone clicks. AEO aims to get you named, quoted or cited inside an AI answer, where the win is a mention and often no click at all. GEO sits right next to AEO, with more weight on getting your own words retrieved and woven into the generated answer, credited to you. They are not rivals. They share the same fundamentals, and AEO and GEO build on SEO rather than replacing it. Keep SEO solid as the floor, then add answer-first content for the AI engines.

Three acronyms, one search box that keeps changing shape. SEO, AEO and GEO each chase visibility, but they aim at different targets. SEO gets a link ranked in a list, and you hope the reader clicks it. AEO gets your brand named or cited inside an AI answer, where there may be no link to click at all. GEO sits right next to AEO, with more weight on getting your own words pulled into the generated answer and credited to you. The part most comparisons miss: these are not rivals. They run on the same fundamentals, and the two newer ones build on the older one instead of replacing it.

What each one optimizes for

The clearest way in is to name what each is trying to do. The target is different in each case, and the target is what shapes the work.

  • SEO (search engine optimization) tunes a page so a search engine ranks its link. The unit of success is a position in the list, and the payoff comes when someone clicks through to your site.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to get you named, quoted or cited inside the AI answer itself. The unit is a mention, and there is often no click, because the reader already got what they needed. This is answer engine optimization.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization) is closely related, with the emphasis on getting your content retrieved and woven into the generated answer, attributed to you. Same idea as AEO, one degree more specific about how your words show up. The longer version lives in the glossary as generative engine optimization.

Where the three overlap

Under the labels, most of the job is shared. Every one of these wants content a machine can crawl, read cleanly and trust. A page that is fast, well structured and honest helps you rank on Google and helps a model quote you. Fix that foundation once and all three benefit, which is why running them as three separate campaigns wastes effort.

The differences are real but narrow. They live in the unit of success and in how you measure it, not in some rival technology stack. So it helps to collapse three labels into the split that actually matters: ranking a link versus being in the answer. AEO and GEO both land on the answer side.

SEO · rank a link
AEO / GEO · be in the answer
Unit of success: a ranking, a position in the list.
Unit of success: a mention or a quoted passage inside the answer.
What the reader does: clicks through to your site.
What the reader does: often nothing, the answer already named you.
Where you win it: mostly on your own pages.
Where you win it: on your pages and across the sources the model reads.
How you measure it: rankings and organic traffic.
How you measure it: mentions and citations across engines.

AEO and GEO: close cousins

People use AEO and GEO almost interchangeably, and for good reason. Both are about earning a place in a generated answer instead of a ranked list. The shade of difference is where the weight sits. AEO is usually framed around the mention: getting named or cited when a buyer asks. GEO puts more on retrieval, on getting a specific passage of yours pulled in and attributed. In day to day work the two overlap so much that the split rarely changes what you do next.

So which should you prioritize?

The honest answer is not a hedge: they stack, and the order is what matters. SEO fundamentals are the floor. AEO and GEO are what you build on top.

Start by making sure a machine can reach and understand your site: crawlable, clear, current, and backed by something checkable. That foundation is what lets a model retrieve and trust you in the first place, so skipping it to chase AI mentions is building on sand.

Then add the answer-first layer. Write self-contained answers to the questions buyers actually ask, structured so a passage can be lifted cleanly. Attribute your claims, and get your name onto the third-party sources models lean on, like review platforms and community threads. That is the part that turns a good page into a cited one, and it is the whole point of optimizing for answer engines.

The priority is not really a choice between three things. Keep SEO solid, layer AEO and GEO on top, and watch both scoreboards.

Common questions

Are SEO, AEO and GEO competing strategies?
No. They share the same fundamentals and build on each other. SEO ranks a link, AEO earns a mention in the AI answer, and GEO gets your content woven into that answer. Keep your SEO solid and add the answer-first work on top.
What is the actual difference between AEO and GEO?
Very little in practice. Both aim to get you into a generated answer rather than a ranked list. AEO is usually framed around the mention, being named or cited when someone asks. GEO leans on getting a specific passage of your content retrieved and attributed to you. Most teams treat them as one effort.
If I can only do one, which should it be?
SEO fundamentals first. A crawlable, clear, trustworthy site is the floor that AEO and GEO both build on, so a model can retrieve and trust you at all. Once that is in place, answer-first content is what earns the mentions.
