How to rank on ChatGPT

The short answer

You don’t rank on ChatGPT, because ChatGPT doesn’t rank anything. It reads a question and writes one answer, naming a couple of brands. To be one of them: publish clear, self-contained answers to the questions buyers ask, keep your story consistent across the sites it already reads (your site, G2, Reddit), back your claims with something checkable, and stay current.

The honest version first: you don’t rank on ChatGPT, because ChatGPT doesn’t rank anything. It reads a question and writes one answer, usually naming a couple of brands. Your job is to be one it can name. That is a different game from SEO, and most of it comes down to being the clearest, most trustworthy source on the question a buyer just asked.

Why “ranking” is the wrong word

There is no page two in an AI answer. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best tool in your category, they get a short reply that names maybe two or three options and moves on. You’re in that reply or you’re invisible for the query. Position ten doesn’t exist.

So the real question isn’t “how do I rank higher.” It’s two questions: how do I get named at all, and how do I get named more often than the brand winning the spot right now. That reframe matters, because it changes what you work on. This is the core of answer engine optimization.

How ChatGPT picks the brands it names

Two things feed the answer. The first is training data, everything the model absorbed about your market when it was built. The second is retrieval. When ChatGPT searches the web, it pulls live pages and cites them, the same way ChatGPT Search and Perplexity do.

Both reward the same thing: a brand that shows up clearly and consistently across the sources the model already reads. Your own site. Review platforms like G2 and Capterra. Threads on Reddit. The occasional press mention. When those sources agree on what you are and who you’re for, the model has an easy time recommending you. When they’re thin or they contradict each other, it reaches for someone whose story is cleaner.

What actually gets you named

  • Answer the question in one self-contained sentence.Models lift passages, not whole pages. If the answer to “what’s the cheapest CRM for a small team” is buried three scrolls down, it won’t travel. Put it near the top, plainly.
  • Keep your story consistent everywhere the model reads. Your homepage, your G2 profile and the Reddit thread where someone asks about you should line up. A contradiction makes you a risky pick.
  • Cover the questions people actually ask,not the keywords a tool spits out. The phrasing buyers use with a chatbot is longer and more specific than a search query, and that’s what you want to answer.
  • Back your claims with something checkable. A real number, a named customer, a source. Evidence-dense pages get pulled into answers; adjective-dense ones sit there.
  • Keep it current. Models favor fresh sources, and a page that was accurate two years ago quietly drops out of the answer.

How to see where you stand right now

Before you change anything, find out what ChatGPT already says about you. Ask it the questions your buyers ask. “Best [category] for [use case].” “Alternatives to [competitor].” Watch whether it names you, what it gets right, and who it names instead. Run each one a few times, because the answers wobble between attempts.

Doing this by hand across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity gets old fast, and eyeballing it once tells you nothing about the trend. A free AI visibility audit does the first pass for you: it asks the real buyer prompts across every major engine and shows you where you land.

How long it takes

Not overnight. ChatGPT’s live search re-crawls on its own schedule, and its training data updates in big, infrequent jumps. Publish a strong page today and you might see it surface in answers within a few weeks, or you might be waiting for the next model update. Either way, track it. “I think it’s working” is not a plan, and the whole point of writing content that gets cited is watching the citation actually land.

Common questions

Can you pay to rank on ChatGPT?
No. There is no ad slot inside the AI answer. You earn the mention by being a source the model trusts, and no budget shortcuts that.
How is this different from Google SEO?
SEO earns a link you hope someone clicks. This earns a mention inside the answer, often with no click at all. The fundamentals overlap, but the target moves from ranking a page to being quotable.
Does traditional SEO still matter?
Yes. ChatGPT's search reads the same web crawlers do, so a fast, crawlable, well-structured site is the floor. Answer engine optimization is what you build on top of it.
