Content Gap Analysis: A Scoring Sheet and AI Citation Check
A content gap analysis finds topics your competitors, searchers, and AI answers cover that your site does not. Sort each gap as missing, thin, or uncited, score it, then write the best.

Key takeaways
- A content gap analysis is finished only when each gap is classed as missing, thin, or uncited and scored from −3 to 9. The rival keyword export is the first input, not the result.
Run a
site:search on your own domain before writing anything. A thin page gets rewritten, and a duplicate page competes with it.- A page can rank and still go uncited, so test 20 buyer questions per topic in AI tools. Google says its own AI features need no special optimization; our inference is that coverage is the fix elsewhere too.
- As of October 2026, Ahrefs Lite to Advanced and Semrush SEO to Advanced cost $129 to $549 a month, and Google Search Console is free.

A rival-keyword export gives you a long list and no way to choose from it. Every term looks like a gap, whether you have no page, a weak page, or a strong page the tool did not match. Choose badly and you write duplicates of pages you already own while skipping the topics that would have earned traffic.
Rankings no longer settle the question either. Ahrefs found in March 2026 that only 38% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews, the AI summary shown above search results, also rank in the top 10 for the same query. Citations and rankings overlap only partly, so a list built from rankings alone cannot see a whole class of gap.
Below you get a triage table that sorts every gap into one of three types, a scoring formula with worked examples, a prompt test for AI answers, and the cost of each route.
What is a content gap analysis, and what should it find?
A content gap analysis compares what your site covers with what searchers, competitors' pages, and AI answers cover, and finds topics where you are absent, weak, or never cited. Every gap, as we use the word from here on, falls into one of three types, and each type has a different fix.
| Type | How to confirm it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A. Missing |
| Write a new page |
| B. Thin | You have a page that ranks at position 11 or lower, or that covers visibly less than the top results | Expand the existing page (see our content refresh triage table) |
| C. Uncited | Your page ranks in the top 10 and covers the topic as fully as the results above it, but your domain is cited for fewer than 4 of the 20 test prompts below | Rework the page to answer the question the way the cited pages do |
If a page fits both B and C, fix B first. The thresholds in this table (position 11, 4 of 20) are our rules of thumb, not industry standards. Adjust them to your market, but fix them before you start so every topic is judged the same way.
The table matters because most gap reports surface only type A. A rival ranking for a term you do not rank for looks the same whether you have no page or a weak one. Writing a new page for a type B gap puts two of your own pages in competition for one query. That is our reasoning from how search results work.
How do you pull content gap candidates without writing the wrong pages?
Filter harder than the tool's default, then cut every term that fails three checks before you score anything. A keyword gap report lists the terms your rivals rank for and you do not. It is the raw material for a content gap analysis, not the plan.
Pull. Enter your domain and three or four direct rivals. Ahrefs' Content Gap report accepts up to 10 competitors. Semrush's Keyword Gap compares up to four. Ahrefs' own guide starts from monthly search volume above 20, keyword difficulty (KD, the tool's score for how hard a term is to rank for) under 30, and at least two competitors in the top 10 (Ahrefs). Requiring two rivals filters out one-off rankings. If your site is established, relax the KD limit; if it is new, keep it.
- Branded?Pass if the term does not contain a competitor's name or product. Fail and delete if it does.
- Same page type?Open the top five results. Pass if at least three are the kind of page you would publish (guide, comparison, tool, template). Fail if they are product pages and you were planning a blog post.
- Already covered?
Run the
site:search. Pass (a real type A gap) if nothing relevant exists. If a page exists, reclassify the term as type B.
Cut. Run each remaining term through the three checks above.
No paid tool? Google Search Console is free and shows the queries your own site already earns impressions for. Queries where you appear at position 11 or lower are type B candidates, and those between 11 and 30 are closest to page one. Search Console cannot show what rivals rank for. Rival data needs a rival-aware tool (free tiers are limited) or manual review of the top results.
How do you score content gaps so the right ones get written first?
Score each gap from −3 to 9 with a four-part formula, write anything that reaches 6, hold 3 to 5, and skip anything below 3. This is our model, not an official method: Score = Business fit + Intent fit + Evidence we can add − Effort, each rated 0 to 3.

- Business fit: 0 means unrelated to what you sell; 3 means readers at the decision stage.
- Intent fit: 0 means the top results are a page type you will not publish; 3 means a close match.
- Evidence we can add: 0 means nothing competitors lack; 3 means original data, a tool, or a worked example.
- Effort: 0 means a small edit; 3 means new research plus design.
Demand is handled before scoring: the volume filter removes terms with little search, and the prompts in the AI test are questions buyers already ask. Be strictest with the evidence term. If you can add nothing a ranking page lacks, a new page is a copy, and the score should show it. The 6-point cutoff is our recommendation, chosen because it requires strong fit and some original contribution.
| Example topic | Type | Business fit | Intent fit | Evidence | Effort | Score | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Comparison of two products we sell | A | 3 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 7 | Write |
| Definition of an industry term | A | 1 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 2 | Skip |
| Pricing guide we have, ranking 24th | B | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 5 | Hold, revisit next quarter |
How do you check for AI citation gaps?
Write 20 buyer questions for the topic, run them in the AI tools your buyers use, and record for each question whether your domain is cited. A page can rank and still be absent from AI answers, so this is a separate test, run per topic.

- Write the prompts
Use the questions a buyer asks before purchase, phrased as a person would type them. Our guide to B2B AI buyer prompt research covers how to find them.
- Run themRun them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode (Google's conversational search). Run each prompt twice in each tool. That is 6 answers per prompt and 120 answers in total.
- LogLog which domains each answer cites.
- Score each prompt yes or noA prompt counts as cited if your domain appears in any answer from any of the three tools across the two runs. Citation rate = cited prompts ÷ 20. Pass at 4 of 20 (20%) or more; fail below that. Because the "any answer" rule is generous, a fail is a reliable signal. Both thresholds are our rules of thumb.
- Find the leadersApply the same rule to each competitor domain. Any domain cited for 5 or more of the 20 prompts is a leader, again by our rule of thumb. Open its page and compare structure: does it answer the question in the first sentence, hold a table, carry a dated number or original data?
If your page ranks in the top 10 and covers the topic fully but fails the test, you have a type C gap. Google's documentation says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet," and that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" (Google Search Central). That statement covers Google's own AI features. Our inference is that the same content-first approach applies to ChatGPT and Perplexity: improve the answer, the evidence, and the coverage rather than hunting for markup. For the wider workflow, see our AI visibility audit.
To skip the manual run for one question, our free ChatGPT Visibility Checker asks ChatGPT live and shows the answer, the sources it cites, and whether you are in it. It gives three free checks, with results emailed to you.
What does a content gap analysis cost?
As of October 2026, Ahrefs Lite to Advanced and Semrush SEO to Advanced cost $129 to $549 a month, and Google Search Console is free. That range counts seven plans billed monthly. Ahrefs also sells a $29 Starter plan and Semrush offers a free plan; both sit below the range. Ahrefs Enterprise ($1,499, annual commitment) sits above it.
| Route | Monthly price (USD, as of October 2026) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | $0 | Your own queries and pages |
| Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449 | Rival keyword gaps, up to 10 competitors | |
| SEO $139, Starter $199, Pro+ $299, Advanced $549 | Rival keyword gaps, up to four competitors | |
| PageLens.ai | Launch $299, Growth $699, Enterprise $1,499 | Whether AI answers cite you, across 3, 5, or 7 answer engines |
PageLens.ai publishes this page and sells one of the tools in the table.
How does PageLens.ai close uncited topics?
PageLens.ai runs your tracked prompts on a schedule and shows which pages the engines cite instead of yours. We then build a brief from each gap: every brief starts from a page AI already cites instead of you, and the finished page is published to your domain after your approval.
A 20-prompt test is a spot check. Scheduled tracking shows whether a rewrite moved your citation rate. What each plan adds beyond the table above:
- Launch: 100 tracked prompts, run weekly, with 25 content pieces a month.
- Growth: 100 tracked prompts, run daily, with 50 content pieces a month.
- Enterprise: 200 tracked prompts, run daily, with 100 content pieces a month.
Content Brain and unlimited users are on every plan. Launch, Growth, and Enterprise each cover one website and up to six markets; Agency pricing is custom for multiple sites. The full comparison is on our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions
Partly. Google Search Console shows queries where your site already appears, which surfaces thin pages, and a site: search finds missing ones. Rival data needs a tool's free tier, which is limited, or manual review of the top results.
Yes, as a separate check, because rankings and citations overlap only partly: Ahrefs found in March 2026 that 38% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews also rank in the top 10. Test 20 buyer questions per topic and count how many cite your domain.
