in the answer

Four things have to hold for an AI engine to cite you — readable, retrievable, credible, then named.

AI Search Optimization is the work of making sure that when someone searches with the help of an AI engine, your content and brand are among the sources it surfaces and cites — not just the pages a traditional crawler would have ranked.

What it means

Search increasingly resolves inside an AI-generated answer: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar engines read across the web and hand back a synthesized response, naming and citing only a handful of sources. AI Search Optimization is optimizing your content and brand to be one of them — to be surfaced and cited in those AI-generated results across the major engines.

An umbrella term, honestly

It’s worth being plain about this: AI Search Optimization is an umbrella practice that overlaps heavily with Answer Engine Optimization, Generative Engine Optimization and AI SEO. These are, for the most part, different names for the same emerging goal. The field is young and its vocabulary hasn’t settled, so treat the labels as near-synonyms rather than rival disciplines.

What actually moves it

The levers are consistent no matter which name you use, and they build on each other in order:

  • Be readable. Keep your content crawlable and cleanly structured so answer-engine bots can reach and parse it in the first place.
  • Be retrievable. Write self-contained passages that answer a specific question directly, so a model can lift the right chunk without the surrounding page.
  • Be credible. Build the authoritative, consistent signals — across your site and third-party sources — that make an engine trust you enough to cite.
  • Answer the question. Address what the buyer actually asked, clearly and up front; the directness is often what earns the citation over a vaguer competitor.

How you measure it

Because AI answers vary by prompt and by engine, you can’t infer your standing from rankings alone. You measure AI Search Optimization by prompting the major engines with the real questions your buyers ask, then tracking whether you’re mentioned, which sources get cited, and how your share of the answer compares to competitors. That visibility is the baseline any improvement is measured against.

Frequently asked

Is AI search optimization the same as AEO or GEO?
Largely, yes. AI Search Optimization, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and AI SEO are different names that grew up around the same emerging goal: being surfaced and cited by AI. The emphasis shifts term to term, but in practice they describe one job.
How do I start?
Begin with what you can control: make your content crawlable and cleanly structured, answer real buyer questions in self-contained passages, and build credible third-party signals. Then measure whether the engines actually name you for the prompts your buyers ask, and close the gaps.
Does it replace SEO?
No — it extends it. The fundamentals of good SEO (clear, credible, well-structured content) still apply. AI Search Optimization adds a second target: being usable and quotable by an answer engine, not only rankable by a crawler.
