Where you’re named when buyers ask
AI visibility is a measure of how often, and how favorably, AI engines surface your brand when buyers ask questions in your category. It is the AI-era analog of search rankings and organic traffic — the yardstick for whether you show up where buyers now look.
What AI visibility measures
When a buyer asks an answer engine “what’s the best tool for X?”, the reply names a few brands and cites a handful of sources. AI visibility captures where you land in that reply: whether you’re named at all, how you’re described, and how much of the recommendation is yours versus a competitor’s.
It isn’t a single number so much as a rollup of several dimensions:
- Presence. Are you named or cited at all when buyers ask the questions in your category?
- Breadth.Across which engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google’s AI Overviews? Presence in one doesn’t guarantee presence in the rest.
- Sentiment. What the models actually say about you — the framing and tone of the mention, not just its existence.
- Citations. Which of your pages the engines reach for and attribute the answer to.
- Share of voice.Your slice of the recommendation versus every competitor’s across a set of prompts.
Why it matters
As answer engines resolve more queries in place, being visible in the answer is the new equivalent of ranking. A brand can have great traditional SEO and still be invisible in AI answers — the two surfaces are optimized and measured differently, and doing well on one says little about the other.
How you measure it
You measure AI visibility by prompting the engines with the real questions buyers ask and analyzing the answers — the mentions, the sentiment, the sources — because you can’t manage a surface you can’t see. That means running your category’s prompts across every major engine on a regular cadence, then reading what comes back rather than inferring it from a rankings report.
AI visibility vs. search rankings
The distinction is not cosmetic — the two measure fundamentally different things.
Rankings tell you where a link sits; AI visibility tells you whether you’re in the answer and how favorably you’re framed. A strong position in one is no guarantee of the other, which is why the two need to be watched separately.
Frequently asked
- How do you measure AI visibility?
- You prompt the major AI engines with the real questions your buyers ask, then analyze the answers — whether you're mentioned, what the models say about you, which of your pages get cited, and how your share of the recommendation compares to competitors. You can't manage a surface you can't see, so measurement means watching the answers themselves, not a rankings dashboard.
- Why can't I just check my Google rankings?
- Rankings tell you where a link sits in a list of results. They say nothing about whether an AI engine names you inside its generated answer, or how it describes you when it does. A brand can rank well in classic search and still go unmentioned in AI answers — a different surface, measured in a different unit.
- Which AI engines should I track?
- Track the engines your buyers actually use to research your category. In practice that means the largest answer engines — ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot — since presence in one doesn't guarantee presence in the others. Breadth across engines is one of the dimensions of visibility.
