OpenAI's search answers with real-time, cited web info — the capability SearchGPT prototyped.

SearchGPT was OpenAI’s search prototype — announced in 2024 as a test of what OpenAI-powered search could be. It didn’t stay a standalone product for long: the capability was folded into ChatGPT as the feature now called ChatGPT Search. So the name is largely a transitional one today.

What SearchGPT was

In 2024 OpenAI introduced SearchGPT as a prototype: a search experience that answered questions with real-time information pulled from the web, complete with citations, rather than relying solely on what the model had absorbed during training. It was the company’s public step from “chatbot” toward “search engine.”

The point of a prototype is to test, then integrate. Rather than run SearchGPT as a separate destination, OpenAI brought its browsing-and-citing capability into ChatGPT itself, where it became the ChatGPT Search feature.

What it is today

Today, “SearchGPT” mostly means one of two things: the original 2024 prototype, or the general idea of OpenAI-powered web search. The live product people actually use is ChatGPT Search — the same real-time, cited answering, delivered inside ChatGPT.

How OpenAI's search answers

The mechanism is browse-then-answer. When a query calls for current information, the system searches the live web, reads relevant pages, and writes a synthesized answer with citations to the sources it used. For a product or recommendation question, that usually means a short answer naming a couple of options and citing a few pages.

How to show up in it

Because the target is really ChatGPT Search, the levers are the same as for any answer engine — be readable, credible, and quotable:

  • Be crawlable. The system can only cite pages it can read, so keep your content accessible to search and AI crawlers.
  • Be a credible source. Publish specific, evidence-backed answers to the questions your buyers ask, so the model reaches for you.
  • Write extractable passages. Answer directly, up front, in self-contained sentences that can be lifted and attributed cleanly.
  • Stay current. Real-time search favors fresh sources; stale pages drop out of the answer.

Frequently asked

Is SearchGPT still a separate product?
Not really. SearchGPT was a prototype OpenAI announced in 2024 as a test, and its capability was rolled into ChatGPT as the ChatGPT Search feature. Today the live product is ChatGPT Search, so “SearchGPT” mostly refers to that early prototype or, loosely, to the concept of OpenAI-powered search.
What was SearchGPT?
It was OpenAI's search experience: a test that answered questions with real-time information from the web and cited its sources, rather than relying only on what the model had memorized. It was OpenAI's step from a chatbot toward a genuine search tool.
How is it different from regular ChatGPT?
Plain ChatGPT answers from what it learned in training, which can be out of date. The search capability that SearchGPT prototyped — now ChatGPT Search — browses the live web and answers with current information and cited links, so the response reflects what's true now, not just what the model remembered.
