Sentiment Analysis
Using natural-language processing to judge whether text about your brand is positive, negative or neutral — including how AI models describe you in their answers.

Sentiment analysis is a natural-language-processing technique that classifies a piece of text as positive, negative, or neutral — and sometimes into finer emotions. It turns free-form opinion into something you can count and track.
What it does
At its core, sentiment analysis is a classification task: feed in a sentence, a review, or a paragraph, and it returns a label for the tone. It doesn’t understand meaning the way a person does — it estimates, weighing words and context to predict whether the text leans favourable, unfavourable, or flat. Done across thousands of texts, those labels become a measurable read on how something is being talked about.
Where it’s long been used
Brands have used sentiment analysis for years to gauge perception at scale — across product reviews, support tickets, and social media — turning a flood of unstructured opinion into trend lines. The appeal is coverage: no team can read every mention, but a classifier can triage all of them and surface where feeling is shifting.
Why it matters for AI answers
The same technique now applies to how AI models describe a brand in their answers. In AI search, presence alone isn’t enough — the tone of the mention carries real weight.
Its limits
Sentiment analysis is an estimate, and it’s worth holding loosely. Its known weak spots include:
- Sarcasm and irony.“Great, another outage” reads as positive to a naive classifier.
- Mixed opinion. A text that praises one thing and criticises another resists a single label.
- Missing context. Comparisons, quotes, and domain-specific meaning can flip the true sentiment.
Read in aggregate and over time, it’s a genuinely useful signal. Read as a verdict on any single mention, it can mislead — so treat the number as a direction, not a truth.
Frequently asked
- How does sentiment analysis work?
- It's a natural-language-processing task that reads a piece of text and classifies its tone — most often as positive, negative or neutral, and sometimes into finer emotions. Modern approaches use language models to weigh the words and context and output a label, so a review or an AI answer becomes a data point you can count and track.
- Why track sentiment in AI answers?
- In AI search, being mentioned isn't the whole story — how you're described is. An answer that names you dismissively, or lists you only as the pricey option, is its own problem. Tracking the sentiment of your AI mentions tells you whether the visibility you're earning is actually helping.
- Is it always accurate?
- No. Sentiment analysis is a useful estimate, not a verdict. Sarcasm, mixed opinions, comparisons, and context it can't see all trip it up, so a single classification can be wrong. It's most reliable read in aggregate and across time, where the overall pattern matters more than any one label.
